Senior Heritage Consultant - about the role

The successful candidate will work with our experienced heritage team and be based in either Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Wagga Wagga or Bega. 

Due to our rapidly expanding work program, NGH is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Heritage Consultant, specialising in Aboriginal and/or historic heritage to join our friendly and dynamic team.

You will have a high level of consulting experience in archaeological heritage survey and assessment in NSW. You will possess an excellent understanding of site survey methodologies and field site recording. You will also have experience in undertaking heritage assessments, report preparation, Aboriginal community consultation, client liaison and project management.

The successful applicant will have at least 5 years' experience as an archaeologist or heritage consultant. You will enjoy working in a team of other likeminded heritage consultants and as part of a broader multi-disciplinary team, working both in Queensland and NSW and thus prepared to travel. You will also have the ability to manage staff and field teams.

The NGH heritage team has a wide range of skills and experience and our growing work program is diverse and regularly requires survey and excavation for small and large projects including State Significant projects. Basic GIS skills would be preferred. We currently work in Queensland, NSW, ACT and Victoria, offering the successful applicant the chance to further their own career in a growing company.

NGH employ over 60 permanent and part time staff across our six regional and metropolitan offices across NSW, ACT and QLD. Our offices work together closely. Selection Criteria & Application Process

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in Archaeology / Cultural Heritage to minimum Honours level or equivalent
  • At least 5 years' experience as an archaeologist or heritage consultant
  • Experience in conducting heritage surveys, site recording and report preparation
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in the application of the NSW Government Heritage Legislation including the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage Guidelines and Codes of Practice and other relevant NSW and Commonwealth heritage legislation and procedures for Aboriginal and/or Historic heritage
  • High level writing, research and communication skills
  • Experience in Microsoft Office computer programs and industry specific programs including GIS
  • A current Australian Driver's License (Manual license) and ability to drive for long distances
  • Being able and prepared to undertake field work and have the ability to work in remote locations
  • Knowledge of WHS obligations and responsibilities relevant to the role

Desirable criteria

  • Expertise in a specialist area such as:
    • Stone artefact recording and analysis
    • Historic archaeology
    • Historic heritage site recording and assessment
  • Excavation experience
  • Managing field teams
  • First Aid Certificate
  • 4WD training
