About the Program

MacKillop Education Services provides education support to children in out of home care and adolescents at risk of leaving school without vocational skills. The students referred to MacKillop Education Services have a history and/or ongoing experience of trauma and their needs are complex and diverse. Often the students are engaged with the child protection system, have mental health issues, display challenging social and emotional behaviours and have not attended school for some time. 


About the role

We are seeking a dynamic and passionate individual to fill an Education Support role at our Specialist School in Geelong. This program in Geelong is responsible for providing education to children and young people who are disengaged, or at risk of becoming disengaged from Education.    

The primary objective of the Education Support role is to work collaboratively with classroom staff by supporting them to enhance the learning outcomes of students. This role will report to and receive direct supervision from the Education Support Leader.


About you

Our successful applicant is someone who can enhance educational outcomes and advocate for children and young people with diverse and complex needs. You will have a desire to work collaboratively to support students with barriers to learning, as well as a knowledge and understanding of the impact of trauma on learning and the capacity to develop and implement education plans.


Key selection criteria

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • Relevant work experience and a minimum Diploma Qualification or Certificate IV in Education Support or Special Needs.
  • An understanding of teaching and learning support strategies and the ability to implement these as required.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with students, care givers, community service providers and other staff.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in understanding the unique nature of providing high quality educational experiences to young people with multiple and complex needs, including those marginalised from school and society through trauma, abuse and neglect. 
  • Demonstrated commitment and capacity to actively contribute to a broad range of school activities including student excursions, camps and the marketing of our education programs to the Catholic Education Office, the Education Department and other stakeholders.
  • An understanding and commitment to the objectives and values of the organisation, including Sanctuary Commitments, as outlined above, and a capacity to represent MacKillop values as required by the role.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with others and exercise influence in a diversity of contexts.

This is a full-time role commencing January 2019.  This role is based in Whittington, Gelong VIC.
