This is a one year fixed-term contract commencing 29/01/2019 to 13/12/2019.

The Teaching Principal is responsible for leading a small team of staff in the planning, development and delivery of programs to ensure educational outcomes are achieved in a safe and supportive learning environment which reflects community values.

The school is currently a one-teacher school, with plans for a second teacher during 2019. It's located in the Barkly region 200km southeast of Tennant Creek and a 3-hour drive to Alice Springs. The school is classified as a Category 3 remote school and caters for students from Pre-school to Year 7. It has an enrolment of approximately 23 students with about 18 in regular attendance. There are good amenities in the community which is located on a cattle station. Nearby is a larger community with more amenities and facilities that can be accessed by car.

The position is categorised as TP1 (Teaching Principal 1) with a salary of $113,494 + super + remote benefits.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing educational leadership and support to school staff in matters relating to effective teaching practice, curriculum delivery and student assessment and undertaking an appropriate teaching load.
  • Providing professional leadership to all teaching and support staff to ensure high-level cooperation and commitment from staff in supporting student learning and their own ongoing learning.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective consultation and liaising with parent and community groups to ensure widespread community support for understanding of and involvement in the school and its programs.
  • Ensuring the school is managed and administered effectively in accordance with Department of Education (DoE) policies and protocols, engaging staff in forward planning and performance improvement, managing and maintaining DoE assets (school buildings, residences, equipment and vehicles).
  • Working collaboratively with Departmental managers and advisory staff and contributing appropriately as a member of the school's leadership team.

Selection Criteria

  • Successful teaching experience in achieving learning outcomes in a multi-levelled context and with English as a Second Language learners.
  • Effective administration management/organisational experience in a teaching situation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a leader and an effective team member and to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
  • Sound working knowledge of relevant policies, school curriculum and assessment and reporting procedures.
  • Successful experience in involving parents and the community in all aspects of school life programs.
  • Teacher Registration with TRB NT and an Ochre card (or the capacity to obtain)
  • Relevant qualifications in TESOL / ESL (desirable)
  • An understanding of working in a remote Indigenous community (desirable)
