The Role:

The NSWBC is seeking an experienced Policy Manager, Workforce Skills to join their Policy and Advocacy team

Accountable to the  Senior Manager, Policy  NSWBC

The Role:

Developing and advocating policy positions on skills, education and training which advance the interests of NSW Business Chamber members and NSW businesses generally.

  •  Seeking information and advice from NSW Business Chamber members in the formulation of policy and consequent response to government.
  • Informing and advising members and broader business clients about NSW Business Chamber positions on and developments in education and training and related advocacy by NSW Business Chamber. 
  • Writing professional and well researched submissions, articles and media releases that prosecute key member issues and advance the position of the NSW Business Chamber in this field.
  • Summarise available research and relevant policy discussions at both the federal and state level and provide timely briefs across the policy and commercial divisions of the NSW Business Chamber.
  • Produce succinct, well-argued and persuasive policy advocacy positions, analysis and advice.
  • Develop and present quality and timely policy and advocacy briefings, analysis and advice to the NSW Business Chamber executive, Policy Committees and Council.
  • Persuasively represent the NSW Business Chamber at high level Ministerial, Departmental, Parliamentary and business leader briefings and meetings.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with a network of key government, education, business and subject matter-expert stakeholders.
  • Actively promote the education and skills positions of NSW Business Chamber to key government and education decision makers and develop the relationships necessary to facilitate such communication.
  • Prepare regular media releases and opinion pieces articulating key policy reforms and measures to address skill shortages, improve the delivery of training in both NSW and Australia.
  • Provide secretariat service to the NSW Business Chamber Workforce Skills Policy Committee.
  • Assist the Policy and Advocacy team communicate with members and staff of NSW Business Chamber and the wider public through presentations, newsletters, news media and the internet

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Highly developed, persuasive written and oral communication skills and ability to tailor communication to different audiences
  • High level understanding of and preferably, experience with issues impacting on the delivery of education and training in NSW or demonstrable capability to acquire such understanding quickly
  • Strong understanding of the state and national business policy environment,
  • Capacity to work independently in identifying and analysing issues and suggesting advocacy positions
  • Excellent personal organisation skills and ability to prioritise and meet deadlines with agreed resources
  • Capacity to engage and understand the perspectives of key education and training stakeholders including students, education service providers and the wider vocational and tertiary education sectors
  •  Understanding and experience in engaging in the legislative policy process
  •  Demonstrated capacity to establish, manage and influence a network of stakeholders including Government representatives
  •  Strong presentation skills and experience addressing stakeholder groups

Tertiary qualifications in business, law, public policy, economics or other relevant disciplines
